FREEDOM WALK/RUN: SAFETY
• Dress for rain and cool temperatures. San Francisco
tends to be cool and rainy during the month of November. The
temperature is on average in the lower 50 degrees Celsius. And
the rainy season for San Francisco is normally from November
to January. Be prepared for these cooler temperatures and potential
rain. We have suggestions also for those who would like to participate
and avoid the rain or participants who would like to participate
without walking the entire 5 miles.
• Make yourself visible. Wear light-colored and reflective
clothing. Add reflective tape to your clothes, or put on a reflective
vest, arm bands or hat. Carry or wear a light on your hat or
waist pack. Small, flashing reflective lights are available
at running and cycling stores.
• Obey traffic signals, signs and regulations. Look both
ways. Proceed with caution through intersections.
• Connect with drivers--make eye contact and wave before
crossing streets. Make your intentions clear, and seek their
acknowledgment.
• Carry identification.
• Be aware of your surroundings, and other people in your
vicinity. If someone or something makes you uneasy, avoid it.
• Walk with a friend--two people are more visible, and
safer, than one alone.
• Stay alert! We strongly recommend that you avoid using
Walkmans or radios while training AND during the run/walk. Headphones
can block the sound of approaching traffic and people, such
as runners, cyclists, rollerbladers, or those walking with strollers
or dogs.
• Meeting us at the end: If for any reason you feel that
you must stop, please do! You can always meet us at the end
of the run (Sutro Heights Park) by catching the 38 or the 38L
bus).
