Workshop: "Wearing Our Agency on Our Sleeves"
3PM-5PM, October 3, Wednesday
Woman's Building, San Francisco 3543 18th St # 8, San Francisco,
CA
Historically, buttons have been wore as fashion and as political
statements, from flower button designs to statements. During
the Vietnam War, political buttons were worn to contest the
war ("End The War In Vietnam!" or "Bring the
Troops Home Now!" or "March Against the War: Women's
Contingent"). In this workshop, we will engage with the
question: If you could make a statement with your button on
your sleeve, what would it say about modern day slavery?

The workshop, “In and Out of Focus: Photography as a Way
of Reflecting,” aims to empower participants by teaching
them photography skills and ways of seeing as a basis to critically
reflect on their lives and their communities. During this two-session
workshop, students will be introduced to the history of photography
as an art form and taught the basic techniques of picture-taking.
They will use the camera to photograph their everyday surroundings,
and during workshop, we will discuss the content and form of
their pictures. These workshops will emphasize the importance
of group trust and participation by including discussion groups,
group photographing, constructive critiques, and a field trip.
All students may choose to include their photographs in the
“Out of TimeSpace” symposium and multimedia art
exhibit sponsored by UC Berkeley and the San Francisco Art Institute.
